Safety & Security

The Safety and Security Team works with all district staff members across the district to provide the safest environment possible for our students, staff and visitors. This is done through continual training, planning, and by continuing to align our security procedures with the most current standards. While our district has many forms of security technology in place, we believe that the first line of defense for a crisis is the vigilance of our staff, students, and parents in terms of providing awareness and opportunities for prevention. Each of us can minimize the impact of emergency situations by ensuring we have plans in place that allow us to act quickly and safely.

Keeping our students and staff safe at school is a top priority. We partner with the Estes Park Police Department to provide a School Resource Officer (SRO) who works closely with all schools to serve as the liaison for police support when needed. Estes Park Schools coordinates with all local emergency responders to ensure our procedures and plans for fire, flood, lockdowns and other drills are current and reflect best practices for student safety.

Note to Parents/Guardians

In the event of a school emergency, please refrain from immediately responding to the school, as doing so may impede the timely deployment of emergency services and compromise the safety of students en route to the evacuation site. After the completion of rostering, ensuring that all students are safely accounted for, and confirming that the environment is secure, the reunification process will be initiated. At this point, you will be notified to proceed to either the school or the designated reunification site to be reunited with your child. In a reunification event, all students must be picked up by a parent, guardian, or emergency contact. Only students 18 years or older are allowed to check out themselves.

Our Role in Safety

The Estes Park School District believes that staff, parents, students, and community members play an integral part in keeping learning environments safe. Each stakeholder has a specific responsibility:

STAFF is expected to:

See something, say something! Report any issues, concerns, or rumors related to safety.
Initiate emergency response procedures promptly and effectively.
Account for all students and staff to ensure no one is left behind or unaccounted for.
Follow school emergency protocols, including fire drills or lockdown procedures, as practiced during regular drills.
Ensuring the safety and well-being of all students and staff under their supervision.
Maintaining calm and providing clear instructions to students and others.
Communicate relevant information through proper channels about the situation.
Providing first aid or medical assistance to injured individuals, if trained to do so.
Collaborate with other staff members/administrators to manage the emergency response efficiently.
Follow up with students and staff after the emergency to provide support and address any concerns or needs.

PARENTS and FAMILY MEMBERS should be empowered to:

See something, say something! Report any issues, concerns, or rumors related to safety.
Follow and support all security measures when you visit one of our school buildings. This includes checking in and out of the school office and providing proper identification.
Ensure contact information is updated regularly in the school's PowerSchool student data system. This includes: Phone numbers, email addresses, mailing and physical addresses, etc.
Keep emergency contacts on file and up-to-date. This type of contact is someone that you can entrust your student with in your absence. Once this information is on file with the school, you should make sure the contacts are aware that they have been listed as "emergency contacts" for your student(s) and that they may receive messages via text, phone, and/or email during an emergency or other situations.
Monitor phone, email, or district websites during an emergency rather than attempting to contact the school directly.
Keep calm and composed to set a positive example and provide emotional support for your child.
As hard as it may be, do not respond to the school until asked by school authorities to do so.
Follow emergency protocols and procedures outlined by the school.

STUDENTS will be encouraged:

See something, say something! Report any issues, concerns, or rumors related to safety.
Follow instructions from teachers, staff, and emergency responders promptly and calmly.
Helping classmates that may need assistance.
Avoid spreading rumors or misinformation that could cause panic.
Keep personal belongings secure and not hinder the evacuation process.
Be prepared to provide any information about injuries or incidents to emergency responders.
Follow school emergency protocols, including fire drills or lockdown procedures, as practiced during regular drills.

COMMUNITY MEMBERS, BUSINESSES, and ORGANIZATIONS can:

See something, say something! Report any issues, concerns, or rumors related to safety.
Cooperate with authorities and avoid interfering with emergency response efforts.
Follow and support all security measures when you visit one of our school buildings. This includes checking in and out of the school office and providing proper identification.
Participate in meetings such as SAC (School Accountability Committee, held at each school level) meetings and DAAC (District Advisory Accountability Meetings).
Offer assistance to school staff and emergency responders if needed, and it is safe to do so.
Remain calm and provide support to students, parents, and staff who may be affected by the emergency.
Offer shelter or support to students or staff who may need temporary accommodation or assistance.
Promote and support school efforts by modeling safe behaviors every day, and leading by example. Estes Park is a strong and close knit community, that draws strength by engaging in local learning for a global future. Demonstrating civility, empathy, respect, non-discrimination, and positive interpersonal relationships as a community sets a social standard that fosters non-violent lifestyles community-wide.
Supporting the school and its community in recovery efforts following the emergency, such as fundraising or providing counseling services if needed.
