Meet the Counselor
Hello! My name is Shannon Ritchey, and I am the school counselor at Estes Park Elementary. I am very happy to be a part of such a wonderful school and community!
I have a Master’s Degree in School Counseling from the University of Northern Colorado. I also have a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education from Buffalo State College in Buffalo, New York. I was an elementary classroom teacher for several years and taught 1st grade, 2nd grade, 4th grade and 6th grade. This year is my 4th year as an elementary school counselor.
In my free time, I enjoy running, yoga, reading, baking, and spending time outdoors with my husband and our dog. We like to camp, hike, and ski together!
What does an Elementary School Counselor do?
Classroom Counseling Lessons
I teach developmentally appropriate, preventative lessons in each classroom every other week. This gives me a chance to interact with every student at the school. Lesson topics might be: feelings identification and coping skills, social skills, creating and navigating friendships, and problem solving skills.
Small group counseling is provided for students experiencing similar concerns. Topics may include: making and keeping friends, emotion regulation, coping with separation/divorce and/ or loss, getting organized/study skills and/or improving self-esteem. The groups generally range from 4 to 6 students and last for 6 to 8 sessions. The students for these groups can be recommended by parents/guardians or by staff members.
Individual Student Support
Short term one-on-one counseling support is available to all students. Students may self-refer or be referred by teachers, staff and/or parents. Confidentiality is respected. I can also refer you to community resources if needed.
I am available to meet with teachers, administrators, and parents to discuss the needs of individual students, and work together to help students.
