The aim of the TAG (Talented and Gifted) program in Estes Park School Dist R-3, is to provide a challenging and rigorous curriculum with academic acceleration for the students with exceptionally gifted learning abilities.  The program provides intervention for exceptionally gifted students in grades Kindergarten through twelve. The District recognizes that these students require an academic curriculum, educational experiences and attention to affective needs above and beyond that of other students. The goal of the program is for bright, talented students to become analytical thinkers, creative producers, and practical problem solvers as well as developing into autonomous life-long learners.  Participation in the TAG program allows students to achieve at a level commensurate with their abilities while integrating within an appropriate peer group. Students who meet qualification criteria for the program have an ALP (Advanced Learning Plan) written by a TAG teacher in collaboration with the student and the student’s parent(s) and reflecting individual strengths and weaknesses, interests and learning steps.  The ALP is reviewed yearly by the TAG teacher, the student, and the student’s parent(s) to review progress and adjust as needed.

 Focus of Program

Gifted student education is a shared responsibility among educators, students, parents, and community members for the learning and growth of gifted students. The regular classroom teacher is a key person in educating the gifted student.  The classroom teacher is in the best position to guide the learning of gifted students directly.  The TAG program builds upon and enhances regular classroom instruction.

At the Elementary level the focus of TAG is in accelerated reading and writing instruction through a pull out model in grades 3-5.  Affective needs are met with working with the same TAG teacher throughout Elementary school.

At the Middle School level the focus of TAG is on critical thinking skills through an advanced Science curriculum in a pull out model. The Middle School addresses affective needs through Seminar classes and continued support through the Secondary TAG teacher working with students from 6^th through 8^th grades.

At the High School level, in addition to focusing on critical thinking skills through an advanced Science curriculum, TAG students are offered AP (Advanced Placement) courses as well as College Credit Courses.  A Post Graduate Center is also available for students to pursue post High School studies. The High School addresses affective needs through Seminar classes and continued support through the Secondary TAG teacher working with students from 9^th through 12^th grades.
