Tips & Information

Before Class Begins

SchoolCenter PictureLook over the substitute teacher's folder left by the classroom teacher.  (If you can't locate one, check with the school secretary.  All teachers are requested to have an emergency plan for when they are absent.)
SchoolCenter PictureLocate emergency exits.
SchoolCenter PictureLocate emergency bells, how to get help (depends on the individual building), etc.
SchoolCenter PictureWrite assignments on the board (most elementary teachers have a posted daily schedule on their boards.)
SchoolCenter PictureLook over lesson plans, worksheets, and other things that will be done for the day.  (If you don't find worksheets made or enough materials, this is a good time to pull out your own "Bag of Tricks".)
SchoolCenter PictureIntroduce yourself to the teacher next door or across the hall so you can solicit help from that teacher if necessary.
SchoolCenter PictureCheck the room to locate the procedures the teacher may have for computres, bathrooms, etc.  If none is posted, that may be something you have on your own procedure's sheet and/or transparency.

When Students Arrive

SchoolCenter PictureTalk to the first student in the classroom - this may be your first ally.
SchoolCenter PictureHave students begin with their "bell work" or "warm-up" to begin class.  Few teachers, except the ones for the youngest students, don't have something for students to do to focus on the day's work.
SchoolCenter PictureGet a sense of what's gone on before today by asking lots of questions about the content, the answers to the "bell work" or "warm-ups".
SchoolCenter PictureFollow the regular classroom teacher's lesson plans thoroughly, collecting and putting notes on graded papers.

When Students Leave the Class or for the Day

SchoolCenter PictureLeave a detailed note for the regular teacher.
SchoolCenter PictureClean the room (optional, but recommended).
SchoolCenter PictureGrade homework/class work (optional, but recommended).
SchoolCenter PictureFill out the substitute evaluation and return it to the building secretary.

Daily Activities & Events

No Substitute for Preparedness

Provide substitute teachers with a list of daily activities and general responsibilities.  Also list any upcoming events that substitute teachers should know.
